Student Charged With Driving 100 Mph On Back Bay Street
BOSTON (CBS) — A Boston University student has been charged with driving 100 miles per hour near the Back Bay scene were two pedestrians were struck and killed earlier this year.
Boston police say Zeguang Xu, 19, of Boston, was speeding down Beacon Street at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday in his blue Maserati GranTurismo. It was raining and the roads were wet in the 30 miles per hour zone, police said.
Authorities said Xu and a female passenger drove through a red light at Beacon and Fairfield streets – the intersection where Jessica Campbell and Jack Lanzillotti were killed in June when another driver allegedly ran the same red light.
A woman who lives at the intersection was glad to see police out. "I am glad the police are finally being more vigilant on the Indianapolis on Beacon Street," she said.
"High speeds, poor driving conditions – this could have been a recipe for disaster," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement. "We're very fortunate no one was hurt, including the driver himself."
Police stopped Xu at Beacon Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
Witnesses said the driver looked embarrassed as he sat in the car surrounded by police.
They say he gave the name and date of birth of someone else, told officers that the vehicle was his friend's, and that he left his wallet and driver's license at home. Police said they were able to determine that the car did belong to Xu, who did not have a license but did produce a Boston University ID.
Officers arrested Xu and his female passenger drove the Maserati home.
A Boston University spokesman said Xu will likely be called in to a judicial affairs hearing by the school.
Xu was arraigned Thursday on charges of operating without a license, providing a false name to police, speeding, failure to stop and negligent operation.
