Strong Winds Blamed For Toppled Trees, Downed Power Lines
BILLERICA (CBS) --- Strong winds are blamed for damage to homes and cars across the region.
Billerica Police responded to Governor Peabody Road where a tree came down on the roof of a house and the hood of an SUV parked in a home's driveway. Billerica Fire Department says three adults and a dog made it out of the home safely.
"As a precaution, we're having National Grid cut power to the house," Fire Captain Steven Jenkins told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "The tree fell from the side yard, onto the roof of the house."
In Boston, a wind gust caused a tree to fall on a Jeep on Charles Street.
On Woburn Street in Andover, strong winds brought down a tree, snapping power lines and a utility pole.
No one was hurt but power is out in the neighborhood.
"There was a banging, crashing noise outside the house," one neighbor said.
Andover Police said the tree was very old and they've had problems with old trees in the past. National Grid says power should be restored by mid-afternoon.
Additional issues were reported on the campus of Bridgewater State University when a large tree came up, roots intact, and crushed a fence.
According to weather watcher network SKYWARN, gusts brought down a tree and power lines in Lincoln and a tree was blocking the road in Uxbridge.
Warwick, Rhode Island experienced winds gusts up to 50 miles-per-hour. Gusts ranging from 40 to 44 mph were recorded in Boston, Newburyport, Chatham, Taunton and Fall River, according to SKYWARN.
Strong winds are expected until sunset Thursday.
