Habitat For Humanity Home Robbed And Vandalized In Stoughton
STOUGHTON (CBS) - A home being built by Habitat For Humanity was hit by thieves and vandals.
Police say about $3,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a home on Commercial Street in Stoughton. The basement was also covered in paint.
The Daxberger family was just a few weeks away from moving into their brand new home, something they'd dreamed of for years.
WBZ-TV's Jim Armstrong reports
"For our oldest son, he's going to be 13, he's never lived in a house," said Erin Daxberger. "So it's going to be huge for him."
The Stoughton natives were chosen by South Shore Habitat For Humanity to receive the house after putting in hundreds of hours of work into it.
The best part? It's specially equipped for their 4-year-old boy Landin who has muscular dystrophy and can't walk.
But this Monday, when Erin came to check on things, there was a problem.
Erin says, "The door was wide opened, like it had just been opened, and I yelled in, anybody in here, hello hello?"
Someone had broken in, made a mess inside and stolen thousands of dollars worth of tools.
At first they were angry, but that quickly turned to sadness.
Those tools are very important. I learned to use those tools. Other people, the house before us was built with those tools, my house was built with these tools, and the next house isn't going to be built with those tools.
Work on this house will have to slow down until Habitat gets the cash to purchase more tools. Unless, of course, someone's conscience gets to them.
"I want them just to bring the tools back and put them on the deck and that's it," says Erin. "I don't want anybody to be in trouble at Christmas time. I just want the tools back because it's the right thing to do."
The theft will likely delay the family's move-in date by about a month.
