Storm-Free For Several Days
One week ago today, it was 70 degrees with winds gusting past 50 mph. Since then, cold air has been locked in place with temperatures running 5 to 15 degrees below the average for this time of the year. And there are no solid clues that above average temperatures will be back for at least another 10 days. Albeit cold, expect benign weather for the next several days. Our conditions will be governed by the combo of a sprawling high pressure system in central Canada and an intense storm over the Canadian Maritimes. The flow of air between these two quasi-stationary systems will create a fair weather regime with a continuation of chilly weather. A mix of sunshine and clouds will exist through Tuesday. A weak storm will be steered across the Southern States with the northern periphery of a narrow strip of snow crossing the nation's capital on Sunday. There could be a couple of inches falling on the cherry blossoms! We would only see some streamers of wispy cloudiness in the southern sky on Sunday as the feature is booted out over the Atlantic. The next weather maker will arrive from the Ohio Valley late Wednesday. Presently, it appears that, again, some light snow could fall over parts of the area Wednesday night into early Thursday. Subsequent forecast cycles late this weekend and early next week should provide a more confident prediction for that system.
Interestingly, the northern mountains received several spells of fresh snow this week amounting to a foot in some spots. As a result, you will find really fabulous late season winter conditions on the slopes for skiing and boarding this weekend. There could be some spotty flurries up there tomorrow with a sunnier scenario for Sunday with highs both days of 30-35 degrees with a brisk wind at times.
