Stomach Virus Shuts Down Berlin Elementary School
BERLIN (CBS) -- A nasty stomach bug is making its way through schools all over the state, including Berlin, where administrators closed an entire elementary school as a precaution.
Berlin Memorial School had no classes on Tuesday after about 60 children became ill with a stomach virus.
Over the weekend, school officials got word of kids getting sick. Custodians were sanitizing the building on Monday morning, but administrators soon realized that about 25 percent of students were absent.
"We decided to close the school, do a thorough cleaning," Pupil Personnel Services Director Karen Molnar told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "Hopefully we'll just get ahead of it."
The closure may have inconvenienced parents, but many are glad that more kids won't get sick.
"Parents have no problem with the school being closed," one Berlin resident told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "It's the right thing to do."
School will reopen on Wednesday, the superintendent said.
