Stevie B Out Of Jail, Denies He Owes $420,000 In Child Support
BOSTON (AP) -- Singer Stevie B disputes a claim he owes more than $400,000 in child support but says he's "moving forward" after being arrested and spending several days in jail.
The singer, best known for the 1990 hit "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)," was arrested Friday after performing at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. He was released from jail Tuesday after making a payment of $11,000.
On Monday, he agreed to a schedule of payments for approximately $420,000 in child support, including a lump sum payment of $10,000 and weekly payments of $921. His lawyer said he paid an additional $1,000 with the required lump sum and has offered to pay an extra $500 per week.
The singer, whose full name is Steven Bernard Hill, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he disputes the amount an Agawam woman claims he owes in support for their two daughters, ages 17 and 18. He called himself a "loyal, loving father."
"I always have provided for all my children," said the singer, who also has two children from his first marriage and three children from his current nearly 20-year marriage.
Stevie B, who lives in Las Vegas, said everything was going to work out "great."
"I'm looking forward to the future and just a wonderful relationship with my beautiful daughters," he said.
His lawyer, Justin Nadeau, of Portsmouth, N.H., said there is an "enormous discrepancy" between what Stevie B believes he owes and what the mother of his children says he owes.
Nadeau said he plans to present documentation of all the payments the singer has made at his next court hearing, scheduled for Nov. 18. He said the singer has started making extra payments as a gesture of goodwill.
