State Police Trooper Helps Deliver Baby On Storrow Drive
BOSTON (CBS) – A Massachusetts State Police trooper helped a Revere woman give birth on Storrow Drive early Tuesday morning.
Police said Trooper Patrick Devin was flagged down by a driver on Storrow Drive in Boston at about 2:40 a.m.
Not long after, baby Raheem Chomba was born. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 1 oz.
Raheem's mother, Mary Omari told WBZ-TV she and her new son will likely be released from the hospital later this week.
Raheem's father was driving to the hospital with Omari in labor, but he realized birth was imminent and pulled over on the westbound side of Storrow Drive near the Mass Ave. exit and called 911.
State police said the man noticed the cruiser approaching and flashed the lights of his SUV to get Devin's attention.
Thanks to Devin's help, Omari delivered her baby boy. Raheem was wrapped in a blanket, paramedics arrived and Omari was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
"(Devin) was extraordinary," said Omari, who was stunned how quickly her labor began after feeling her first contraction around 1 a.m.
"He knew what he was doing. He was calm, which kind of helped in this situation," said Omari.
Just hours old, Raheem already has a nickname.
Omari said the newborn's family has nicknamed Raheem "Storrow" in honor of their experience.
