State Police Say Crackdown On Routes 195, 24 Made Roads Safer
WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) - State Police say their recent 10-week crackdown on drunk and distracted drivers on Routes 24 and 195 in southeastern Massachusetts has made those highways safer.
Police stepped up patrols after a series of deadly crashes during the summer.
"Our efforts have resulted in the arrest of 90 operators, operating their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol," State Police Maj. Anthony Thomas said during a press conference Wednesday morning.
"Many of those arrested are second or subsequent offenders."
Nearly 3,000 tickets were given out in the crackdown, more than half to speeding drivers.
Police also issued citations to 320 people for not wearing seat belts.
The campaign cost the state $124,755.91.
