State Police Crack Down On Speeding At Mass. Pike Tolls
BOSTON (CBS) - If you use the Mass. Pike you may have noticed there is a crackdown going on right row.
One driver tells us, "he said he caught me at 25 and limit was 15."
Massachusetts State Police and the Department of Transportation are on a mission to get you to slow down. They don't call it a speed trap, but a campaign to save lives. The new message is everywhere, from the signs posted to the troopers pulling over speeding drivers.
"The danger is to the toll collectors who are walking between them at certain times," State Police Trooper Jeff Russell says. "Also people try and change lanes real quick as they come into the plaza as someone stops and gets ticket a lot of collisions that way."
In the memory of toll worker Bill Papas who was killed this summer as he worked the tolls in Auburn, they are trying to remind drivers speed kills at the tolls too.
The speed limit is 15 here, but they find most go at least 30 miles per hour.
One driver says, "I didn't realize it was 15, that's crazy slow."
Most drivers admit, they don't really think about toll speed and safety.
"I didn't realize there was a speeding limit," driver Jasmine Jackson says. "Technically, I agree with the speeding campaign because people should know and ignorance could get someone killed."
And that's why they are here, flagging down dozens of drivers, not to make money, but to make an impression.
