State Does Spot Checks For Underage Drinking
DANVERS (CBS) -- It's become a Thanksgiving eve tradition that the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission is on the lookout for in Massachusetts. It's the second busiest night of drinking, just after New Year's Eve.
Agents are out spot-checking for underage drinkers with many college students home for the holiday and hooking up with friends.
WBZ-TV's Beth Germano reports.
Outside a Danvers liquor store, agents found three 21-year-olds buying alcohol, but with an 18-year-old in the car with them they were in violation of the law.
"It's a minor in possession of alcohol," said agent Caroline Guarino. "She shouldn't be in the vehicle unless she's with her parents or a legal guardian."
In this case, the teenager's mother was called to pick her up, no citation issued.
"Our goal tonight is to keep kids safe, let their parents know what kids are up to," said Guarino.
Liquor investigators are vigilant on what could be a particularly dangerous night of drinking before Thanksgiving. Random ID checks are being conducted by ABCC throughout the state.
"All those kids who think they can get away with it, think again," said Jonathan Vitale, a 21-year-old who was checked by the agents.
If someone thinks twice, Guarino says the agents have achieved their goal.
"We certainly don't want anyone drinking and driving," she said.
