State Beaches Still In Need Of Lifeguards As Swim Season Arrives
BOSTON (CBS) -- State pools and beaches are open for the summer but many are still not fully staffed with lifeguards to keep you safe.
The swimming spots will be open 7 days a week starting Father's Day weekend. Right now swimmers can cool off under the watchful eye of trained lifeguards only on weekends.
Last year the state had trouble filling all 400 lifeguard jobs needed across the state. Last June, there were still 175 positions available. Officials say they're better prepared this year than in previous years, but still need to staff up.
"There are positions to be filled but we are not anywhere in the situation we were in last year. We did a robust recruitment effort starting last year. When the season ended we continued to recruit," said Matthew Sisk, the Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
If you're interested in becoming a lifeguard for DCR you must be at least 16 years old.
All lifeguards must undergo training and will earn $13.26 per hour. DCR is especially interested in filling positions in Lowell, Lawrence, Hopkinton, Waltham, and Douglas.
