Spring Training Blog: Mike Napoli Receives Positive Results On MRI
FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) -- It was a productive day for the Red Sox Saturday here in Fort Myers.
Relievers threw live batting practice, although it was more like standing practice since most hitters just stood and tracked the ball into the catcher's glove.
I watched Joel Hanrahan, Andrew Bailey, and Anthony Carter throw.
I thought Bard looked fine. He hurried his delivery a few times, but for the most part he looked fine.
Hanrahan looked solid, with no hiccup, while Bailey looked real good. But again, it was just a day for the pitchers to get used to having hitters in the box and for the hitters to see the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand.
Sunday will be a day for the starters to throw their first round of live bp. Sunday is also the day when players shoot promos, baseball card pictures, etc.
I talked to Clay Buchholz, who says his strained right hamstring is coming along nicely and he expects to get up on a mound Monday. He also says he would take things slow and be careful to not re-injure it.
Meanwhile, Mike Napoli, who got positive results oh his hip MRI, took bp Saturday and will start taking ground balls soon.
GM Ben Cherington said that he doesn't believe Napoli will be ready to play in games when they start down here next week, but he isn't too far behind.
Cherington also said that David Ortiz (achilles) probably won't play in the first exhibition games, but thinks David will be good to start the regular season.
Cherington also said he hasn't hired former physical therapist Mike Reinold as a consultant. Reinold was fired after the season.
Spring Training 1 p.m Update
A beautiful morning here in Fort Myers. The sun is coming out, there's a nice breeze, temperatures are expected around 70 degrees. Heaven!
The Sox will head out for full squad workout No. 2 of the spring today. Pitchers will face hitters for the first time this spring. The relievers get the ball, and we're going to watch Joel Hanrahan, Andrew Bailey and Daniel Bard.
Meanwhile, Mike Napoli got positive results on the latest MRI done on his hip. He has avascular necrosis which eventually will force him out of the game. For now, he's been cleared to increase baseball activities. He had been hitting, but now will start taking ground balls at first base.
We'll hear from Napoli tonight on our WBZ news at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. And, we've got plenty of Red Sox from the week Sunday night at 11:35 p.m. from here in The Fort.
