Spring Training Blog: Cody Ross' Swing Perfect For Fenway Park
Some quick thoughts as we watch Red Sox pitchers and catchers (and a few positional players) go through Day One of official workouts.
--Bobby Valentine has a lot of energy. He never stops as he goes from field to field working with players. He's definitely a hands-on guy.
--I watched Josh Beckett, Scott Atchison, Andrew Miller and a few others throw. Atchison is an underrated guy in my book. He takes the ball any time and is legit.
--Ryan Lavarnway has slimmed down. It will be interesting to see where he ends up this year. If he hits, it'll be tough not to find a spot for him on the roster.
--Watching the regulars, and my first impression ... Cody Ross has it. And "it" being that the ball flies off his bat. And, he's mostly a dead pull hitter. The right-handed hitter might put a few dents in the Fenway wall.
--The new facility is huge, with six fields, plus the big league park. It's a great time to be here to watch baseball and there's plenty to soak in.
--Carl Crawford hit off a tee today, which is encouraging as he works back from wrist surgery. Ben Cherington said they won't rush Crawford along this spring.
--I saw Dustin Pedrioa, who shouted to me, "Close down the freeways because I start hitting tomorrow!"
