Spanish Tall Ship Arrives At Boston Harbor, Open To Public Tuesday
BOSTON (CBS) -- Despite the dreary weather, naval officers are busy at work on board the historic Spanish Tall Ship Juan Sebastian De Elcano.
"You are on the sailing ship that is the greatest navigator of history," Commanding Officer Enrique Torres Pineyro said.
Elcano has been at sea for the past five months. The 88-year-old ship arrived at Boston Harbor on Monday in all of its glory. The four mast top sail schooner is the third largest tall ship in the world and is the official training ship of the Spanish Navy. On Tuesday, it will be on display for the public as part of Sail Boston.
"We have beautiful port and history of hosting these ships in a grand way. Boston is open and happy to receive them," Sail Boston manager Dusty Rhodes said.
The ship has more than 2000 meters of lines and ropes. There are 254 personnel on board the ship from commanding officers to civilians. Built in 1927 the Elcano is one of the well most traveled ship in history. It's been around the globe ten times.
"It's the ship that has gone the most nautical miles at sea throughout the world," Public Affairs Lt. Alvaro Veaeustin said.
Elcano has had 56 captains in its history. Its main purpose now is to train naval officers and represent the Spanish navy. The ship will dock at Pier Four in Charlestown starting Tuesday and will remain open to the public until June 20th.
