South Boston Businesses Step Up In Wake Of Amy Lord's Murder

SOUTH BOSTON (CBS) - With many people in South Boston on edge in the wake of the murder of 24-year-old Amy Lord and two other violent attacks in the neighborhood, some local businesses are stepping up to help out.

One of those businesses, Southie Shuttle announced Thursday night on its Facebook page that it would be donating free round trip rides each morning from 5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. for women in South Boston to any of the neighborhood's gyms or fitness clubs.

South Boston Businesses Respond To Amy Lord's Murder

Co-owner Dennis M. Conway, a long-time Southie resident opened up the service because he wants to make sure residents in his neighborhood feel safe.

Membership is not required to sign up for the free rides. Conway says women who want to use the service should call the night before.

The free rides will be available through August and include a list of gyms includes Motivated Fitness, Peter Welch's Gym, The Boston Athletic Club, Gold's Gym, Cross Fit Southie, Wave Fitness, Channel Fitness and any other gyms located in South Boston.

One South Boston gym, Ultimate Self Defense is offering free self defense classes for women in the neighborhood.

Owner Andrea Muccini said in the wake of recent events, she felt compelled to help.

"It's awful and frightening and we want to do this for our community," Muccini said on the gym's website.

Those self defense classes will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 p.m.- 8 p.m. through August.
