Source: Red Sox Won't Name New Manager Until Later This Week

BOSTON (CBS) - WBZ-TV has learned that the Red Sox won't name a new manager until later this week.

The Sox are deciding between Tigers third base coach Gene Lamont and former major league manager Bobby Valentine to fill their managerial vacancy.

Valentine is in Japan visiting a hospital in the tsunami-ravaged city of Sendai before heading to Tokyo for a charity event, where he was to be a guest at the Major League Baseball Cafe. CBSSports.com is reporting that Valentine is flying back to the U.S. on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old Valentine spent seven seasons managing in Japan, one stint in 1995 and then again from 2004-2009, winning a Japan Series Championship with the Chiba Lotte Marines in 2005. He also managed the Texas Rangers in the late 1980's and the New York Mets in the late 1990's and early 2000's.

Lamont, meanwhile, has managed twice in the majors: with the White Sox in the mid-90's and with the Pirates from 1997-2000. The soon-to-be 65-year-old served as the Red Sox third base coach in 2001.

The Red Sox had previously interviewed Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, Blue Jays first base coach Torey Luvullo, Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., and now-Cubs manager Dale Sveum for the vacancy.

The next manager will have big shoes to fill in replacing Terry Francona, who had one of the most successful runs in franchise history, winning two World Series titles in eight years with the team.
