Source: Red Sox Sign Aceves
BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Sox continue to add candidates for their pitching staff as they signed former Yankee Alfredo Aceves Tuesday, according to a source.
The deal, which was first reported by Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, is a major league deal for one year. Aceves will earn a base pay of $650,000 with incentives that could add another $200,000.
The 28-year-old righthander is 14-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 59 games over the past three seasons with the Yankees. He only appeared in 10 games for New York last season due to a back injury.
However, Aceves is ready to go as pitchers and catchers report for duty next week in Fort Myers.
The plan is to stretch him out in Spring Training as a starter and then make a determination after that as to whether or not he will be a starter or reliever. It's the same strategy the Red Sox use with most of their pitchers in the spring.
