Somerset Hit & Run Victim Dies, Driver Surrenders
SOMERSET (CBS) - A woman struck in a hit-and-run in Somerset died Wednesday, hours after a driver surrendered to police.
A 68-year-old woman was hit by an SUV late Tuesday night as she tried to cross Route 6, moments after leaving Somerset Liquors.
The driver didn't stop. But about two hours later, a Swansea woman saw a newscast and discovered that police were looking for her vehicle, a Lexus 300 SUV.
She turned herself in and told officers she didn't stop after the incident because she thought she hit an animal.
About eight hours later, the victim died at Rhode Island Hospital.
Police say the driver could face a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident, death resulting.
No names have been released.
