Some Things We Missed

So with the excitement and everything that went into the week that was UFC 118, the rest of the MMA world did not stop.

As such, here is a recap of some of the more noteworthy news from across MMA over the past week.

Although nothing official has announced, Dana White stated that an Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen rematch was in the works. Previously, White had stated that Vitor Belfort was likely to get a title shot after Sonnen, but due to tightly contested war that the two had at UFC 117, Belfort will have to wait. This fight is likely to happen sometime early in 2011.

After that announcement, it was revealed that Vitor Belfort will instead be taking on Yushin Okami at UFC 122. If the BJJ black belt could defeat Okami, this fight would likely end up being a tune-up match as he waits for the winner of Silva-Sonnen II.

Dana White also confirmed that Rashad Evans will take on Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua for the light heavyweight title, but that fight will also be put on hold until next year. Shogun recently underwent yet another knee surgery which will keep him sidelined until the middle of next year. Despite the UFC's propensity for interim titles, Evans has stated he doesnt want an interim belt and instead would rather wait for the champ.

In a potential number 1 contender bout for the light heavyweight championship, UFC 123 will come to you live from The Palace of Auburn Hills and will feature Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Lyoto 'The Dragon' Machida. After dominating accomplished wrestlers such as Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz, it will be interesting to see if Machida can bounce back from his loss to Shogun and implement a similar strategy against Rampage.

The UFC welterweight title will be defended at UFC 124, as champion Georges St. Pierre will take on Josh Koscheck after their season of The Ultimate Fighter wraps up. The event will emanate from the Bell Centre in Montreal on December 11th and will mark the champion's 4th title defense since defeating Matt Serra for the title in 2008.

At a media session following his loss at UFC 118, BJ Penn announced that he is anxious to get back in the cage asap. "The Prodigy" claims he has come away from his bout against Frankie Edgar unscathed and is just anxious to fight (Takanori Gomi perhaps?). Penn lost a unanimous decision to Edgar on Saturday night, despite being the favorite as challenger in the fight.

After dismantling Jorge Gurgel at Strikeforce: Houston, KJ Noons has been granted a title shot against Strikeforce Middleweight champion Nick Diaz at the Strikeforce event on October 9th. This is a rematch from their November 2007 bout, where Noons defeated Diaz due to doctor's stoppage after the first round. Despite many clamoring for a Diaz-Jason 'Mayhem' Miller battle following their Strikeforce: Nashville, that fight will have to wait. In the meantime, Miller will take on Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba at Dream 16.

Kimbo Slice is trading in the Octagon for the ring and has announced that he'll be leaving MMA and pursuing a career in boxing, with a fight likely to occur sometime before the end of the year. Slice was a competitor on The Ultimate Fighter 10, getting eliminated in the first round of competition and then going 1-1 inside the Octagon.
