Some Chatham Beaches Closed To Swimmers Due To Shark Threat

CHATHAM (CBS) - Some beaches in Chatham are closed to swimmers due to the threat of sharks.

All beaches on the ocean side of Chatham are indefinitely closed to swimming after more sharks were spotted over the weekend.

Included are North Beach, North Beach Island, and South Beach. Parks and Recreation Director Dan Tobin said those beaches will likely be closed for swimmers for the rest of the season.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz reports.

"There was a seal killed right in the very shallow water, very close to the beach, near North Beach in Chatham. This occurred on Sunday afternoon. We were alerted about it on Monday, and we took that action from there," said Tobin.

WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.

But, Tobin said beach-goers can still go in the water on the south-facing beaches.

Swimming is still allowed at Lighthouse Beach from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
