Snow Storm Beginning To Wind Down

BOSTON (CBS) – The snow is winding down now as expected. In fact, we have reports of sunshine in Central Massachusetts!

This storm has truly been amazing. If you went to bed last night before midnight, you may have thought not much was going to happen. In a four-hour period of time, between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., the snow came down at an absolutely amazing rate. Snowfall rates of 2" as much as 5" per hour fell at the height of the event. A widespread 6-12" is now blanketing our entire area, a lighter fluffier snow inland and very heavy, wet snow along the immediate coastline and in Southeast Massachusetts.

Watch Melissa Mack and Barry Burbank's Forecast:

There was some minor coastal flooding at high tide (around 5 a.m.), and the winds gusted over 50mph at the coastline.

The rest of the day will be quite tranquil, and the tides are receding and snow is ending rapidly. There is plenty of time to clean up our latest dumping of snow, and for now, there is no big snow storms are in the forecast.

By the way, we had blizzard-like conditions overnight, but we did not sustain it for three hours, which is the official criteria to call the storm a blizzard in Boston. No doubt, some spots likely did reach the official criteria in our area.

I just spoke with National Weather Service and they do not have an official snow total yet for Boston. It is taken at Logan, and as soon as I get it I will pass it along.
