Smoke Detectors Help Residents Escape Southboro Fire
SOUTHBORO (CBS) – Residents in a Southboro home credit smoke detectors for saving them from a 2-alarm fire that destroyed their home.
Flames broke out around 2 a.m. on Cottage Street. Bill Kane was asleep when he head the smoke detectors.
"I went around the corner to wake up my wife and I couldn't see a foot in front of my face," he told WBZ-TV.
Kane says it was as that point that something else took over.
"Well you don't really think about it.… it's all adrenaline," he said.
He was able to get his wife outside as they waited for firefighters to arrive.
"I got her out of the house and then I called the dog, but the dog never came out," he said.
Kane says the dog and a cat didn't make it out of the home.
Kane's wife was hospitalized with minor injuries.
"She got a little smoke but she seems OK," he said.
Firefighters pulled up to flames pouring out of the home.
"When the units arrived, there was a lot of fire in the back of the house. Fire was coming out of the back of the house," said Southboro Fire Chief Joe Mauro.
The home is believed to be a complete loss. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Kane said he is hopeful his family can rebuild.
Westborough, Hopkinton, and Marlborough provided mutual aid.
