Skyrocketing Gas Prices Prompt Extra Checks By State Inspectors
LEXINGTON (CBS) - With skyrocketing gas prices, state inspectors are stepping up their efforts to make sure drivers aren't getting ripped off.
WBZ caught up with inspector Martin McHardy as he went out on one of his checks. He looks to make sure signs are clear and accurate, customers aren't being taken advantage of and to make sure drivers are getting exactly what they pay for.
So far he says, there have been no major problems with gouging in the state.
McHardy says the price jump prompted the extra checks. "We want to make sure everything is on the up and up," he says.
That's true he says even in Newburyport, where the price of regular is $4.19 a gallon. The owner says he can't afford to sell at lower prices because he doesn't have choices as to what kind of gas he can buy and what he must pay for fees to the oil company.

He says if he dropped his prices to $3.79 a gallon like other stations, he would be losing money on credit card sales.
