Sinkhole Opens Up Next To Lowell Apartment Building
LOWELL (CBS) - A massive sinkhole has opened up the ground next to an apartment building in Lowell.
A break in a water line on Massmills Drive caused the ground to give way Tuesday and neighbors say the hole opened up very quickly.
It's now about 25 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
It swallowed up a fire hydrant and a street sign.
Inspectors say the apartment building is safe.
But, as a precaution, they will put up a temporary fence around the hole when repairs begin Wednesday.
