Signed Sports Memorabilia Stolen From Saugus Barbershop
SAUGUS (CBS) - The buzz at Barber Masters in Saugus Thursday night had little to do with haircuts. "It caught us by surprise I actually asked my boss 'what are you doing remodeling?'" barber Justin Petkewich said.
Employees discovered bare walls, nothing but screws where a dozen pieces of Boston sports memorabilia used to hang. The pieces were autographed by big name stars like Tom Brady, David Ortiz, Larry Bird, Paul Pierce, and Bruins Hall of Famer Johnny Bucyk.
"You sit down in my chair and you're sitting next to Tom Brady and behind Paul Pierce," Petkewich said. "The little kids love it."
Just before midnight, a masked burglar strolled in the back door. He ripped out one surveillance camera, but the other captured him casually stealing every single sporting gem.
"I created this," owner Rebecca said. "My vision, my everything."
What seems clear is that whoever took a crowbar to the door is no stranger to the shop. The man was inside for five minutes and knew exactly what he was getting.
"You've never seen these walls bare before ever, so it is a sickening feeling knowing that there's people out there that don't care about others," Petkewich said.
For the barbers it is not about the money.
"It doesn't feel like home," Petkewich said.
If the stolen stuff is not recovered, the owner knows how she will start to rebuild her collection. Johnny Bucyk gets his haircut there every two weeks.
