Sick Beckett Set To Return Saturday For Red Sox
BOSTON (CBS) – Josh Beckett was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Padres with "intestinal trouble," but is expected to return to the Red Sox rotation Saturday against the Pirates.
"What we're hoping for is he will pitch Saturday," manager Terry Francona said Tuesday afternoon. "That will allow him to have a side day and have a relatively normal week, as opposed to just the first day he feels good get him out there and pitch. Let him get his legs back under him and stuff like that."
"Because of some of the versatility of guys like (Alfredo) Aceves and adding (Andrew) Miller and (Tim) Wakefield, we can get around it with an off day," Francona added.
Francona said Wakefield will now pitch the Sunday finale in Pittsburgh, with Miller pitching Tuesday when the Red Sox start a three-game series against the Phillies.
Beckett is 6-2 on the season and leads the majors with a 1.86 ERA.
