Shriver Day, to honor Special Olympics founder
More than 100 events are being planned for a day in honor of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the presidential sister who founded the Special Olympics.
Special Olympic Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver says athletes and volunteers around the world will pay tribute to his mother on Saturday with various dedications, clinics and competitions. Shriver died in August 2009 at age 88. Her son said the family and organization were overwhelmed with messages of support and condolences after his mother's passing and wanted to create a day to honor her work with the mentally disabled.
Shriver was credited with transforming America's view of the mentally disabled. Her efforts were inspired by the struggles of her mentally disabled sister, Rosemary.
