Should The Celtics Retire Ray Allen's Number?
BOSTON (CBS) -- After almost three years away from the NBA, Ray Allen officially announced his retirement on Tuesday. That has some wondering if the former Celtic will one day have his number hanging at the TD Garden.
Allen is an interesting case, given that he only played five seasons with the Celtics. He had longer runs with the Milwaukee Bucks, who drafted him fifth overall back in 1996, and the Seattle Sonics, spending seven seasons with both of those teams.
Toucher & Rich brought the subject up with CSNNE's Celtics play-by-play man Mike Gorman on Wednesday, and though it's a subject he would rather stay away from, said that Paul Pierce is the only number he would retire of the Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Allen "Big Three."
"[Ray Allen] is [the greatest three-point shooter] but he spent more time with other teams," explained Gorman.
That logic also carries over to Garnett, who Danny Ainge has hinted will have his No. 5 retired by the team at some point.
"I'm in the minority in that one. You could convince me, but you'd have to convince me," Gorman said of retiring Garnett's number. "That's not to knock anything Kevin contributed while he was here; he was certainly the reason the celtics have that championship. But he spent 12 years in Minnesota [before coming to the Celtics], and that seems like the logical place for him to have his number retired, not Boston.
"I think they probably are [going to retire his number], so I'm in the minority on that. I have no ax to grind with Kevin, but when you retire a number you go where he devoted the most his career," he added. "Let's have a night for Kevin, but his number can be retired in Minneapolis."
Gorman also touched on the current Celtics, including the stellar start to the season by guard Avery Bradley and the team's struggles on the glass. Listen to the full interview below:
