Suspect Shot, Killed By Boston Police After Foot Chase
BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Police are investigating their own after an officer shot and killed a suspect in the South End during Tuesday's evening rush hour.
"Police were saying, 'Put the gun down. Put the gun down.' He reached into his pocket and they were yelling at him. He was yelling back," said Garred Lenord who witnessed the shooting.
Boston's Police Commissioner Ed Davis says it started when some plain-clothed officers pulled a man over. "The individual in the motor vehicle that was stopped fled the vehicle," says Davis. "Two officers in our anti-crime unit pursued the suspect for a couple blocks."
Davis says the chase ended on Yarmouth Street. "The report that we have at this point in time is that the suspect produced a firearm," says Davis. "He was ordered to drop the firearm and refused to do so."
He says police shot the suspect once in the chest.
The unidentified suspect was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.
He says police took the suspect's gun from the scene, which is right near several apartment buildings with surveillance cameras and a lot of pedestrian traffic. Police are looking through the surveillance video and questioning witnesses.
Two police officers also went to the hospital. Davis says they were not shot, and their injuries were not serious.
