Shots Fired At Deerfield, NH Police Officer Responding To 911 Hang-Up

DEERFIELD, N.H. (CBS) - A husband and wife from New Hampshire were in court Wednesday after a bizarre attack on a Deerfield Police officer overnight.

A 911 dispatcher had received a hangup call from the couple's home on Old Center Road just after midnight and Officer Roger St. Onge responded.

But when the officer got there, prosecutors say Stanley West denied there was a 911 call and then tackled and punched the officer on the front steps. The wife, Margaret Jane Schultz, was inside.

"While the officer was trying to detain her husband and defend himself, he heard two gun shots go off within the residence," said Benjamin LeDuc, Assistant Rockingham County Attorney.

The officer was able to detain West, and then found West's wife at the top of the stairs and a gun at her feet. Prosecutors say she had fired two bullets from a .38 caliber handgun.

"On the floor where the defendant was standing was a handgun," said LeDuc. "Tests show the defendant had gun powder residue on her hands."

Both husband and wife are being held on $10,000 bail each.

"I can't afford it," Schultz told the judge.

Schultz says she is a healer and also works part time at JC Penney. West says he works at a brewery.

The officer is recuperating from minor injuries.

West faces disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and simple assault misdemeanors.

Schultz faces a felony of reckless conduct.
