Shooting outside Lynn City Hall
A man shot and killed himself during a scuffle with a police officer outside of Lynn City Hall Thursday morning, authorities said.
Police told WBZ's Bill Shields that a mentally unstable man known to investigators approached a Lynn police officer who was working a detail and got into an argument with him.
It escalated into a scuffle and the man grabbed the officer's gun and shot himself in the head, police said.
He died at the scene. His name has not been released.
The officer was not shot. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor scrapes and bruises.
A Verizon spokesperson told WBZ that their workers at the site tried to help break up the scuffle, but were unable to get the weapon from the man
Police sealed off the intersection while a sheet was placed over him.
