Shhh! MBTA To Introduce Commuter Rail 'Quiet Cars'

BOSTON (CBS) -- It may come as no surprise that many commuters do like having some quiet time during their train commute to and from work.

Starting in the new year, the MBTA will introduce "quiet cars" on the Fitchburg and Franklin Commuter Rail lines.

According to the MBTA, 86 percent of the 4,400 consumers who participated in an online poll said the T should test quiet cars on commuter rail coaches.

MBTA General Manager Rich Davey said the MBTA will launch the 90-day quiet car pilot program on Jan. 3.

The three–month quiet car pilot program will operate during peak times with the coach closest to the locomotive designated as the quiet car.

Customers choosing to commute on the quiet car must refrain from using cell phones, disable sound features on electronic devices, and speak in subdued voices.
