It happened in the northbound lanes near exit 11 in Sharon around 7:40 a.m.
Ryan Tvelia, 42, was riding a Norfolk Country Sheriff's Department motorcycle when it rear-ended a vehicle and he was thrown from the bike.
"Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the motorcycle was involved in a collision with one car and then was struck in a secondary collision with a second car," State Police said in a brief statement.
State Police say Tvelia struck a Toyota Rav4 that had slowed down due to traffic. He was thrown from his motorcycle and came to rest in the left travel lane. He was then hit by a Ford Mustang driven by a 25-year-old Foxboro man.
Tvelia, who was in full uniform, was rushed to Norwood Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Traffic was backed up for miles as investigators closed off the accident scene.
Tvelia was a married father of three teenage children and lived in Plainville.
He had been with the department 11 years and was on his way to represent it at the funeral for an officer's mother in Quincy.
