Shaughnessy On Gresh & Zo: Time For Celtics To Move On
Dan Shaughnessy joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak on Tuesday afternoon to talk about the future of Boston Celtics basketball.
Shaughnessy, like many others, says it's time for the Celtics to re-build and move on from veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
"We got six years out of a three-year window. This was great but it really is time to move on," he said. "Unfortunately in that league, it lends itself to keeping you down for a while."
Shaughnessy was in the locker room after the Celtics lost to the Knicks in Game 6 last Friday, and said it felt a lot like a goodbye session among the players.
"You didn't get a sense that this was moving forward together. Everything about it looked like a goodbye. I think Pierce is the first domino in this thing, and they will do something. I don't see them bringing him back, and why would you? If you're not going to win a title in professional lifetimes of Garnett and Pierce, you start looking to go in a different direction."
Will head coach Doc Rivers be around for this re-building process?
"I was shocked two years ago when he re-upped." said Shaughnessy. "I think the other night, he was non-committal, but it surprised me that he was as noncommittal as he was. It never surprises me if a guy like that walks away; he has his money, he has his family and he could get a cushy TV job and work a lot less. I don't think he wants to be the coach of a team led by Rajon Rondo going forward."
