Nauset Beach In Orleans Closed To Swimming After Great White Shark Sighting
ORLEANS (CBS) – Lifeguards at Nauset Beach in Orleans ordered scores of swimmers to evacuate the water on Saturday after a confirmed Great White shark sighting.
According to the Orleans harbormaster, a kayaker first spotted the shark around 2:30 p.m. A lifeguard saw the shark a short time later swimming 10 to 20 yards from shore.
Two officials from the Harbormaster's officer responded by boat and were able to locate the Great White, which Orleans Harbormaster Dawson Farber estimated to be about 12 to 14 feet long.
He said the shark took off from the area and was last seen swimming toward Chatham.
The beach was closed to swimming for the remainder of the day as a precaution.
Farber says there were a significant number of sightings in the area last year.
