Names Of Two Mass. Officers Added To National Memorial For Fallen Officers
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS) -- Two Massachusetts officers killed in the line of duty in 2010 will have their names added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Officer John "Jack" Maguire of Woburn Police and Sgt. Douglas Weddleton will both be added to the wall along with 314 other officers who were killed in the line of duty.
Maguire was killed when he responded to a report of an armed robbery at the jewelry counter of the Kohl's department store on Washington Street on December 26. Sgt. Maguire shot and killed robbery suspect Dominic Cinelli, before succumbing to his own wounds.
Weddleton was killed on June 18 as he worked a construction detail on Route 95 in Mansfield. He had pulled over one drunk driver who was trying to drive through the set-up, and was out of his cruiser, when another drunk driver hit and killed him.
The wall will be rededicated during the 23rd Annual Candlelight Vigil Friday night. The ceremony will be streamed live on the web at www.LawMemorial.org/webcast.
The memorial is on E Street NW between 4th and 5th Streets. The memorial, which was initially dedicated in 1991, now has the names of 19,298 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
