3 Hurt In Mount Washington Avalanche
PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H (CBS/AP) - Authorities say at least three people were injured in an 800-foot avalanche on New Hampshire's Mount Washington Thursday evening.
According to one broadcast report, one of the three is 26-year-old retired Marine Sgt. Keith Zeier, who lost his leg and suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq in 2006. He was climbing Mount Washington to raise funds and awareness for families of Special Operations forces killed and wounded in action.
The three hikers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not known.
Gorham EMS Director Chad Miller says the avalanche happened at about 5 p.m.
The Mount Washington Avalanche Center issued an advisory earlier on Thursday saying, "Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely."
The mountain got a fresh coat of snow Wednesday and Thursday.
