Sen. Ayotte To Meet With Supreme Court Nominee Garland

CONCORD, N.H. (CBS/AP) —  Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire announced Monday she will meet with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland next week.

Ayotte is part of a group of Republicans who have said they are willing to meet with President Barack Obama's nominee, but remain opposed to hearings and a vote until after a new president is elected.

In a statement announcing the April 13 meeting, Ayotte said she will sit down with Garland out of courtesy and respect.

She plans to explain her view "that the people should have a voice in this important nomination through their votes in November."

Ayotte faces re-election in one of the Senate's most high-profile races against popular Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan.

Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire will meet with Garland Tuesday. Shaheen has called for a hearing and a vote.
