Sen. Kerry Urges Yale To Follow Harvard's Lead With ROTC
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Senator John Kerry is calling on Yale University to follow the lead of Harvard University and welcome the military's Reserve Officer Training Corps back to campus.
The Massachusetts Democrat says in a letter to the president of his alma mater that Ivy League universities created a new injustice when they turned away ROTC to protest the now defunct ban on gays serving openly in the military.
Yale spokeswoman Suzanne Taylor Muzzin said Friday that officials are "actively involved" in discussions with the military about reviving the ROTC on campus but are not sure when a decision might be made.
Yale's ROTC program had about 100 participants when it ended in the early 1970s. Some Yale students are involved with ROTC today, but they must attend training at other universities.
