Kevin White passed away Friday night at the age of 82.
After leaving some white roses at the feet of the White statue, Kerry reflected on the legacy White left for Boston and for politics.
"Because of his energy and vision, and just the excitement that he brought to the job, and the young people that he brought - Barney Frank, Micho Spring, and people like that - There was just this cadre of people around him who did exciting, new things in politics," said Kerry.
Kerry said White has left an indelible mark on the city of Boston, and was truly a class act.
White's wake is on Tuesday. He will be laid to rest at a private funeral on Wednesday.
