Sen. Kerry: George McGovern Was 'Voice Of Clarity And Conviction'
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry says fellow Democrat George McGovern was a "voice of clarity and conviction" when the country needed it most during the Vietnam War and Watergate eras.
The former South Dakota senator and three-time presidential candidate died Sunday morning in Sioux Falls. He was 90.
Kerry says McGovern never stopped caring about peace, hunger, poverty and fairness, whether they were in political fashion or not. He says McGovern was a soft-spoken and decent man who lived with humility and never bragged about his heroism as a decorated bomber pilot during World War II.
Kerry paraphrased an old saying that McGovern may not have been president, but McGovern was right.
