Sen. Brown Seeks To Increase Penalty For Harming Marine Mammals
BOSTON (CBS)— Sen. Scott Brown is responding to the killings of six seals on Cape Cod last month with legislation that would more than double the fines for hurting or harassing marine mammals.
Seals, whales, dolphins and other marine mammals are protected under federal law.
Right now, the penalty for violating that law is a $20,000 fine.
Brown wants that number increased to $50,000.
No suspects have been caught in the fatal shootings of six seals that were found dead along the Cape's shoreline.
