Jamie's Pub, Landmark Scituate Restaurant, Destroyed By Fire
SCITUATE (CBS) -- A restaurant that just celebrated its 50th anniversary burned down early Sunday morning--and the town is rallying to show support for the owner.
Firefighters were called to Jamie's Grill and Pub on Gannett Road in Scituate around 4:22 a.m.
The building suffered a partial collapse, and Scituate Fire Chief John Murphy said the building, which recently underwent renovations, is a total loss.
Murphy said he was glad no one was hurt and no other buildings were involved, though.
Crews were aided by help from Marshfield and Cohasset Fire Departments. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to battle the flames but remained on scene all morning.
Within hours of the fire, a GoFundMe page had raised over $2,500 for the staff, who are out of work before the holidays.
"Since we won't be able to stop over the next few months to leave our usual gratuities, let's all pitch in what we can to leave the biggest tip possible for our friends and neighbors at Jamie's N. Scituate during what must be an extremely scary and unsure time for all of them!" the page reads.
Chief Murphy said the loss of the landmark restaurant is a huge blow for both the owner and the community.
"A lot of people have identified with the place. It's the neighborhood pub," said resident Bob Vogel. "It's going to really be missed, I hope it is rebuilt soon."
"It's been the place you could go where everyone know's your name in Scituate for the past 50 years," the GoFundMe page reads.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
Chief Murphy said the building will be torn down within 48 hours.
