Schneider On Toucher & Rich: Would Be 'Shocked' If Beckett Were Moved
The non-waiver trade deadline is at 4pm today and by all accounts the Red Sox are expected to keep starter Josh Beckett.
Matt Schneider of CBS Boston Sports spoke with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich about Josh Beckett getting moved, the possibility of the Phillies moving Cliff Lee, the Cubs trading Ryan Dempster or Matt Garza or both and reports the Arizona Diamondbacks are in the market for an ace.
Rumors flew on Monday that the Sox were talking to the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves about Beckett, but the Sox shot down the rumor later in the day. Does Schneider feel like Beckett is here to stay and will make his start tonight against the Tigers?
"Yeah I'd be shocked if he didn't make the start. I think that at this time of year teams just basically for the lack of a better term don't really say no to talking about guys and then feelers get sent out. Some scouts or some front office types might go to their scouts and say like, 'Hey what do you have on so and so?' and word circulates and all of a sudden it's, oh my gosh he's on the block."
Is there any chance that some of these teams are might just be waiting until Beckett could go on waivers to figure out where they are a little closer to where they might actually need him?
"That's way more realistic to me then seeing something happen today before four o'clock."
They moved on to discuss what other teams around the league might do before the deadline hits this afternoon. The Philadelphia Phillies have been a disappointment this season sitting in last place. They haven't found themselves in last place this late in a season in nearly 10 years and reports are they are looking to move Cliff Lee. How realistic is it that Lee gets moved before the deadline?
The Chicago Cubs are at 43-58 and looking to sell. Names that have been mentioned as guys them could more are Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza. What will happen in Chicago before the deadline?
