Schilling's Game Company's RI Open Set For May
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former major league pitcher Curt Schilling's video game company plans to move its headquarters from Massachusetts to Providence on May 1.
38 Studios announced in September that it had leased a six-story, 104,000-square-foot building at One Empire Plaza formerly used by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island.
38 Studios, named after the former Boston Red Sox pitcher's uniform number, was lured from Maynard, Mass. to Rhode Island with a $75 million loan guarantee underwritten by bonds issued by the state Economic Development Corp.
The deal came under fire from some because the company doesn't have a track record.
A company spokeswoman tells The Providence Journal it's not yet clear how many will work in Providence at first, but the company has projected up to 450 jobs.
