Scal On Toucher & Rich: Is Rondo The Smartest Guy In The Room?
Even though he's out for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL, Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is still garnering a lot of attention.
Sports Illustrated recently did a big story on Rondo, taking a look at his personality on and off the court -- including his skills at "Connect Four."
Former Celtic forward Brian Scalabrine spoke with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich about Rondo on Wednesday, and shed some light on how Rondo acts behind closed doors.
The SI article mentioned how at times in high school and college Rondo was a problem. They even looked at the complicated relationship between Rondo and Doc Rivers.
Does Rondo really think that he's smarter than everyone else in the room?
"Rondo is and was smarter than most people in the room," said Scal. "I would say he's on the same level as Doc Rivers if you want to compare and Doc is an extremely intelligent guy."
"The biggest difference between when I was there and Rondo was there at first, in regards to the maturation of Rondo and the trust from Doc, was Doc trusted Rondo to make calls and make plays -- to decide what offense to run," explained Scal. "That grew as it went along. But early on, you're basically getting a young point guard that had problems with coaches. It's not like they knew each other early on, and there was some friction there. But they both grew up; Doc learned more about Rondo and Rondo learned more how Doc likes to work, and the relationship got better as that moved on."
They also discussed Rondo's respect for other players and whether you need to put a certain type of player around him to ensure he's successful as the centerpiece.
