Saugus Mobil Gas Station Worker Shot And Killed; Suspect Found Dead
SAUGUS (CBS) -- A Mobil gas station worker was shot and killed in Saugus Friday, according to Saugus police. The suspect, who is the victim's brother-in-law, was later found dead in his car.
Police said the victim was a 63-year-old Cliftondale Square Mobil station clerk. He was found shot in the chest and was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect, also 63-years-old, fled the scene in a white Mini Cooper, causing Everett Public Schools to institute a temporary lock-down. He was later found dead in his car at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett in an apparent suicide, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
A witness who was working nearby at the time told WBZ-TV she heard two big bangs.
"We looked over and the guy was on the ground," she said. "We saw the vehicle and that's what blew my mind. I'd never saw anything like this in my life."
The DA's office said there is no threat to the public.
In the late 1990's, the Department of Children and Families gave the suspect custody of the victim's daughters. The shooting is still under investigation.
