Satch Sanders Inducted Into Basketball Hall Of Fame
SPRINGFIELD (CBS) – Boston Celtics great Tom "Satch" Sanders was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame Friday night.
Sanders was drafted by the Celtics in 1960, and spent 13 years with Boston. Known as a defensive player, he averaged 9.6 points and 6.3 rebounds over his career before retiring in 1973. His eight championships trail only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones for the most all-time in the NBA.
"Satch" went on to coach the Harvard basketball team, and had a brief stint as Celtics head coach, before taking a job in the NBA offices.
He was inducted into as a Contributor by the Veteran's Committee, although his championship resume should have been plenty for Sanders to get the honor. He is credited with developing the Rookie Transition Program.
Also inducted were former NBA stars Chris Mullin and Dennis Rodman.
