Salvation Army cuts ties with charity
The Salvation Army is cutting ties with the largest United Way chapter in Massachusetts, ending a decades-long affiliation between the two charitable organizations.
The Salvation Army called the decision a strategic one, saying in a statement on Friday that it had experienced significant cuts in funding as the United Way has shifted priorities to other programs and services.
The United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley said its investment in the Salvation Army had increased by about 18 percent in the current fiscal year.
The United Way said it planned to reach out to the Salvation Army in an effort to restore the more than 70-year-old partnership.
