Keller @ Large: What Does Sales Tax Holiday Say About 'Taxachusetts'?
BOSTON (CBS) -- Why is the annual sales tax holiday weekend so popular in "Taxachusetts?"
It was announced Thursday that once again, shoppers can look forward to a weekend of shopping without the 6.25 sales tax on Aug. 15-16.
WBZ NewsRadio 1030 morning news anchor Joe Mathieu joined WBZ political analyst Jon Keller to talk about the enduring popularity of the tradition, even though some say it's siphoning needed funds away from the state budget.
"Most will agree it doesn't create new money, it just moves money around," Mathieu said. "If you were going to buy it on Labor Day, you'll just do it now."
Mathieu said it's also ironic that some are looking to legalize marijuana on the basis that it will bring more tax dollars to the state.
"We're allergic to taxes, yet the main argument to legalize marijuana in this state is a tax windfall," Mathieu said.
Keller and Mathieu also discussed the surprising frontrunner in the Republican presidential race – Donald Trump.
